Legion Post 32 plans flag retirement at fair

American Legion Post 32 in Homedale will perform a flag retirement ceremony during the Owyhee County Fair next month.
Anyone with old unserviceable flags can drop them off at Tolmie’s Ace Hardware until Aug. 10 to be included in the ceremony, which will take place at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 11, at the flagpole on the fairgrounds.
Flags also can be dropped off at the fairgrounds the day of the ceremony. That day, the Legion will have new flags to exchange for the old ones on a first-come, first-served basis.
Keaveney, who previously served as the American Legion’s flag education chairman for Idaho, said the Legion will have copies of the U.S. Flag Code available at the ceremony.
He said there are misconceptions about flag etiquette: A flag does not have to be burned if it touches the ground, and a flag doesn’t have to be replaced if it starts to look dirty from rain and dust. Instead, a U.S. flag should be washed using dark-colored clothing guidelines and then line-dried.
